Prof Stan Bentvelsen is an experimental particle physicist. He did his PhD at DESY with the HERA collider. After that, he moved to CERN to analyse collisions of the LEP accelerator. In 2000 he became member of the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC and as such he was involved with the discovery of the Higgs boson. Since 2014, Bentvelsen is director of the Nikhef/NWO-i institute and Nikhef partnership between NWO-i and 6 Dutch universities (UvA, VU, UU,RU, RUG, UM). In this role he is responsible for the Dutch National Strategy on Particle- and Astoparticle physics as carried out by the Nikhef partnership. In 2022 Bentvelsen became Director of the Project Office in Maastricht. This Office is responsible for setting up the bid for the Einstein Telescope in the Dutch border region.
