PARALLEL SESSION A
A4 Affiliated Big Science Organizations (ABSOs) I
Wed 2nd Oct 14h00 - 16h00
Hall 27 - Illy
The international research organizations devoted to advanced and unique scientific experimentation selected through the Call for Affiliated Big Science Organizations, will present their investments plans and business opportunities for the coming years. This session will include the first ones, while the other organisations will be included in parallel session D4.

Agenda
One of the main challenges towards the realization of fusion is the extraction of heat from the components that in a fusion power plant must withstand heat loads comparable to those at the surface of the Sun. For this reason, the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility is being built at the ENEA Frascati centre by a consortium involving all the Italian public institutions involved in fusion research and the main Italian energy company. The presentation will review the stats of the construction and the near-term opportunities for industry.

IFMIF-DONES
IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility, DEMO-Oriented Neutron Early Source) – a powerful neutron irradiation facility for studies and qualification of materials to be used in fusion reactors, also able to contribute to the development of tritium and breeding blankets technologies – is planned as part of the European roadmap to fusion electricity. Its main goal is to study and develop a database of material properties under strong neutron irradiation condition similar to the one faced in a fusion reactor. The neutron source is produced by an accelerated deuteron beam impinging on a liquid lithium curtain and generating neutrons with an energy spectrum and flux akin to those to be seen by the first wall of a fusion reactor. The IFMIF-DONES facility has successfully completed its preliminary design phase and is now progressing into the detailed design phase, with the manufacturing of certain components already underway. The construction phase of the DONES Programme officially began with the inaugural DONES Steering Committee on 16 March 2023.
The focus will be on various systems of the IFMIF-DONES Facilities and the industrial opportunities arising from production starting in 2025, depending on different In-Kind Contributions.

MYRRHA
The Multipurpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications (MYRRHA) is a pioneering research facility based on the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) concept, initiated by SCK CEN in 1998. It is the world’s first pre-industrial scale ADS under construction. MYRRHA’s research focuses on advanced HLW treatment through Partitioning & Transmutation, innovative medical radioisotope production, powerful radioactive ion beams (RIB) for fundamental physics, materials for fusion and Gen.IV reactors, and accelerator reliability and energy efficiency.

CTAO
CTAO will be the world’s largest and most sensitive observatory for gamma-ray astronomy. With almost 70 telescopes located in the northern and southern hemispheres, the CTAO will explore the very high-energy Universe within an unprecedented energy range (20 GeV – 300 TeV) and accuracy. The Observatory is supported financially by a growing list of shareholders, which includes more than ten countries and an intergovernmental organisation.
