PARALLEL SESSION C

C4 SMEs Involvement and Engagement Initiatives from BSOs

Thu 3rd Oct 11h15 - 13h00
Hall 28 - Auditorium Generali

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent 99% of all businesses in the EU. They are often referred to as the backbone of the European economy, providing a potential source for jobs and economic growth. SMEs are often well suited for the Big Science market. SMEs can offer considerable more flexibility and in some cases are better prepared to adapt to specific technical requirements of Big Science organisations in advanced technology procurements. These procurements usually entail development and manufacture of a small number of particularly innovative units in a given technology field which quite often don´t fulfil the business model requirements of large industries, but can be more aligned with the SME’s growth strategy based on involvement on highly singular projects.
SMEs selected through the SMEs Call will be formally invited by the IOC to take part in this parallel session and its panel discussion.

Sandra Vogt
ESA

The enthusiasm, flexibility and innovative capabilities of high technology small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are of great value to Europe’s space industry. ESA actively encourages these industry stakeholders to get involved in its programmes and activities, through instruments such as its dedicated SME Policy and Initiative, managed by the SME section. The SME policy is targeted both at newcomers to the space business who need general ESA support as well as at experienced SMEs who have a validated technology or product and have to insert themselves into industrial consortia to gain operational experience. To facilitate involvement in space sector activities, support measures in four areas are being implemented in the frame of the SME Policy, i.e. General Support Measures (e.g. training, networking and visibility events, coaching and assistance to SMEs, raising awareness about business opportunities), Financial Measures, Procurement Measures and Industrial Policy Measures.

Kristel Tans
F4E

F4E aims to increase its efforts to engage small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in procurement activities to broaden the industrial base for fusion in Europe. A survey launched in June 2024 attracted participation from over 120 SMEs, providing valuable feedback on their experience with F4E.
This presentation will unveil initial insights from the survey and anticipate the first F4E SME day, which will take place in Barcelona on 13 November 2024.
